Is it an electrical emergency?
- Burning smell, smoke, sparks or scorch marks at an outlet, switch, light or the panel
- A panel, breaker or outlet that’s hot to the touch, buzzing or crackling
- Half the house is out, or lights dim and surge when appliances run. That can mean a failing main connection or a lost neutral, which can damage electronics.
- Water in the panel, outlets or light fixtures after flooding or a roof leak
- A storm or tree pulled the service mast or meter away from the house
- A breaker that trips immediately every time you reset it
- Someone received a shock from a fixture, appliance or faucet
Do this right now
- If there’s fire or smoke, get everyone out and call 911.
- If a power line is down, stay at least 35 feet away and report it to your utility. Never touch anything the line is touching.
- If it’s safe to reach the panel (you’re dry, not standing in water, and the panel isn’t hot or smoking), switch off the affected breaker or the main breaker.
- Don’t reset a breaker that keeps tripping. It’s telling you something is wrong.
- Unplug sensitive electronics if power is dimming and surging.
- Take photos of damage for your insurer, from a safe distance.
Your side or the utility’s?
In most of the Pensacola area, Florida Power & Light (FPL) owns the power lines and the meter, and the homeowner is responsible for the weatherhead, service mast, meter base, panel and everything inside. Some outlying areas are served by electric cooperatives with similar rules. If the whole neighborhood is dark, it’s a utility outage. If only your house is out, or part of it, check your main breaker and call an electrician.
After hurricanes, a damaged mast or meter base usually has to be repaired by a licensed electrician before the utility will reconnect power, and the local building department may need to inspect the repair. Requests spike after big storms like Ivan in 2004 and Sally in 2020, so getting on a list early matters.
What emergency electrical service usually costs
| Job | Typical range (planning only) |
|---|---|
| Service call / troubleshooting | $150 – $500 |
| Outlet, switch or breaker replacement | $150 – $400 |
| Storm-damaged mast or meter base repair | $800 – $3,000 |
| Same-amperage panel replacement | $1,500 – $2,800 |
Typical market ranges, not quotes. Nights, weekends and post-storm calls usually cost more. Providers set their own prices; ask for the after-hours fee first. More: Pensacola electrical cost guide.
About after-hours availability
We’re a referral service, not an electrical contractor, so we can’t promise an arrival time. Many Pensacola-area electricians take urgent calls outside business hours, and requests marked urgent are passed on right away. To help an electrician prioritize, describe what you see, smell or hear, whether you’ve shut off the breaker, and your town or ZIP code.
